At the University of Baltimore, students do both clinics and externships. And we love for them to do as much practical learning as they can before they graduate. Employers think about our students as practice ready, ready to go when they graduate. And in fact, most of our students actually find jobs through their externship placements. So we have students extra in at a variety of settings. We have externships with attorneys in law firms, in corporate counsel offices, federal and state government, as well as the nonprofit sector. And we also have lots of students who extern in with judges, which is a really great opportunity. So my externship definitely solidified my passion and desire to become a juvenile defender, but my supervisor was amazing. And her dedication to the law just inspired me even more to work extra hard to get to the position that she was in. So right now I clerk in the City Circuit Court for the Honorable Videtta Brown. So we can literally have anything thrown at us. We have criminal jury trials, we have civil trials, motions hearings... I'm really enjoying it and I feel like everyone should at least attempt to have a judicial externship or judicial clerkship. So we have many part-time and evening students at the University of Baltimore, and they often have very established professional careers, and they are getting a law degree for a particular purpose. One of the things that's really important about these externships is that it allows these professionals to build the legal experience they need to make that leap from their current career into the legal career that they're hoping to walk out of this law school with.
